This is a classic type of Afshar and a very clever design . The four spandrels look like a larger version of the central motif and give the impression of an infinite design as they drift in under the border. The quality of the deep blue field also captivates me, like an endlessly deep pool below the red motifs. The fine lines drawn between the flowers give an impression of intricacy on what is otherwise a bold and fairly crude design. The main question I ask myself when I add a rug to my collection is does it have a ‘look’, this piece does not fail to deliver on that score and currently graces my kitchen.

Condition:

Poor condition with quite a lot of wear and some old repairs and patches. The wear if anything adds to its look.
