Afshar rugs are not uncommon but there is a lot of variation in quality. Pieces like this are the ones that excite me most with their fine knotting, strong colours and woollen foundation. They typically have bright red wefts and multiple bands of colour in the selvedge. This is a lovely example, the inner field a lattice of floral motifs interspersed with boteh is surrounded by a hypnotic array of lines. Closer inspection shows these line contain a snaking blue and yellow decoration to amplify the effect. The floral borders really make the rug for me. The main border is more intricate than appears on first sight and the ivory ground on the minor borders freshens the aspect of the rug. A great example of type with good age.
Condition:
Some wear to the field with the odd glimpse of foundation. The weft wrapped ends are untidy at the top.
