Afshar rug, early 20th century

Measurements: 165cm x 126cm (5’5 x 4’2)

80 Knots per inch

Price: £650

This is a striking Afshar in great condition for an antique rug. The outer field with its tiny blue and white squares on a red ground creates a foil for the bold indigo inner field housing the three hooked diamonds. This effect gives it depth which in my mind is one of the magical elements required in a good rug. In contrast most modern rugs are flat and lifeless. This is a robust little rug with a tight weave, it has original selvedges and flatweave ends and a bold design giving it a real presence.

Condition:

Very good condition. Some warp ends protrude into the pile and are more noticeable in the dark blue field. There is a little damage to one of the flatweave ends but otherwise it is very sound.
