I have always loved Kurdish rugs and this beauty does not disappoint. A wonderful floppy rug with saturated dyes and a classic tribal look. I often hesitate to give exact provenance for rugs as this can be frought with danger but this matches in look and weave to a rug in the Jim Burns Kurdish rug book which is attributed to Darreh Gaz in the Khorassan district. The weave is unusual with 3-5 red wefts between every row of knots and a more common name for it might be Kordi Kurd. The central allover field is delightful and the colour of the motifs quite random. The multi coloured diamonds that encroach from the sides lack any symmetry and to me are an artistic expression of the weaver and makes this rug totally unique which can’t be said for many workshop pieces. The cold stars on the main border are flanked by lesser borders of white with a meandering line also typical of the region. Despite it’s issue which I detail below I think this to be a truly beautiful and fascinating rug.

Condition:

The rug has been shortened at some point, there is quite a lot of repiling and areas of obvious wear. The price is reduced accordingly.
