Khamseh rug, early 20th century

Measurements: 179cm x 139cm (5’10 x 4’7)

63 Knots per inch

Price: £280

An attractive and very affordable little Khamseh rug with a lively spread of animals including the typical Khamseh chicken which is a particular favourite of mine. The six stepped and conjoined hexagons are filled with floral designs to top and bottom with the middle pair showing chickens on a white ground. The surrounding field is crammed with more flowers and creatures except for the corners which hold crude boteh. The multiple narrow borders are lively and create a bold frame for the field. This is a lovely little rug with good colour and a lifetime of interest. These antique pieces, even less expensive ones such as this are in my opinion vastly superior to vintage and modern pieces and at this price they can also compete.

Condition:

Fair condition, low to medium pile with a little loss to the ends. The selvedges have been overcast in original colours.
