Here is a fine example of an Alpan Kuba rug. For once the ends and sides are original perhaps with some very minor fixes, it is unusual to find such an original piece. The wonderful design is reminiscent of some Caucasian embroideries and the structure and palette would suggest Seichur which this group of rugs is strongly associated with. The knots are compressed in the vertical and the warps depressed to a degree which certainly distances it from Shirvan pieces. In fact this design is very similar to the Seichur St Andrew’s cross rugs. I could spend a lot of time looking at this rug with its well articulated geometric design, as ever the eclipsing of the motifs at top and side borders hints at an infinite field. An authentic, interesting and beautiful example of North Caucasian weaving.
Condition:
Fair condition, some wear to the pile. The ends and sides are original except for a couple of very minor repairs.
