Daghestan rug, early 20th century

Measurements: 192cm x 108cm (6’4 x 3’7)

100 Knots per inch

Price: £550

The repeated stylised floral motif seen here is characteristic of Caucasian rugs from Shirvan and Daghestan. As we move into the 20th century it becomes harder to place pieces and I do so here with some hesitation based in the main on construction. This is a quite finely knotted rug which produces a well articulated design. The formal borders give way to a clever allover pattern of stylised serrated leaves and flowers that drift into the borders and create a feeling of depth.

Condition:

The black background has corroded leaving some areas of exposed foundation. There are a couple of creases torwards one corner with some wear. The ends had been folded and sewn up which has preserved them well apart from a small section in one corner.
