A classic prayer rug from the Caucasus, I give the label Daghestan with some caution as these white ground prayer rugs are often attributed to Shirvan. It does have a slightly ribbed back which has been noted as a feature of Daghestan rugs whereas Shirvan examples tend to be flatter. The white ground shows off the well drawn allover lattice containing floral motifs in a range of soft colours. Note the random decoration of animals and flowers down each side of the main field which I think adds interest to the picture. The yellow border is very nice and I particularly like the combination of abrashed light blue and soft madder red on the inner border. This is a fragile piece and probably more suited to a wall hanging than a floor rug unless you intend to use it in a quiet space. The balance of light and dark works so well and this combined with subtle dyes results in a very beautiful rug.
Condition:
Poor condition with several areas of wear across the centre as well as in the borders. There are a few holes where only the warps remain. It is one where I would send photos detailing all of the issues. Priced to reflect the condition.
