I have always liked Hamadan rugs, they are affordable, robust and pleasing pieces. This one has something else about it, the quality of the colours and wool make me think it is an earlier example. The tone of the madder red alone moves me, when you see it in contrast to the deep blue of the slightly wonky central medallion it comes alive. The drawing of sprays of flowers and leaves have an archaic look, again they sit well on the soft red ground. The general tone of the whole piece is mellow but never dull. A very decorative rug with a great look and undoubtedly one of the best Hamadan rugs I have owned.

Condition:

Fair condition. Some white cotton warp knots are showing through the pile, a few in a cluster near the centre. A little old moth damage but in general this is a tidy piece.
