Heriz rugs are popular decorative pieces with their robust construction and rich colours. This one has a softer palette, dominated by the light madder red and cream. The addition of the soft purple is welcome as is the space the design affords. Heriz designs can be complex and crowded but this particular carpet allows room for the motifs to breathe and has the look of the finer Serapi examples. The central medallion despite being huge doesn’t fully dominate as the eye is drawn to the cream spandrels where the interlocking motifs are seen more clearly. I always find these big Heriz carpets mesmerising, I struggle to take in the whole design as my eye is drawn from one motif to another. I often talk about tribal rugs having a magic that workshop pieces don’t but Heriz carpets do have something special about them, a different sort of magic perhaps.
