Isphahan is famouse for its high quality decorative workshop rugs. The knot counts are high which allows for the drawing of complex curved tendrils and rounded medallions. They are certainly fine pieces and although I prefer wild tribal rugs with bright colours and wonky designs I can’t help but be impressed by some workshop pieces. This one I find mesmerising to look at such is the complexity of the design. The colours are subdued overall but the very dark background shows off the subtle red and gold, real antique colours I think. The occasional splash of light blue catches the eye like a ray of light catching water. I could look at this rug for a long time, a very fine and beautiful example.
