Karbagh rug, circa 1900

Price: £2,500

This is typical of a type of Karabagh produced for the European market. They are often bright, almost garish and sometimes deploy western design elements. I think this rug has a good balance of east and west with stylized boteh nestling in the diamonds over a formal striped field. I love rugs with depth and this is a great example. The diamond medallions run down the centre while half diamonds float under the main border giving an impression of an infinite field. Even more impressive is the way the striped field flows under these diamonds, this is accentuated by the diamonds obscuring part of the stripe. Altogether a great and interesting piece with a strong presence.

Condition:

Good condition with some well executed repairs in places. I believe the selvedges have been restored too. A very tidy piece which is ready to use.
