Mohtasham Kashans are rare pieces and represent the pinnacle of a fine weaving tradition. Finely knotted with soft wool they often have a unique palette. This piece has a soft blue heavily abrashed and a sublime coral red which borders the central ivory field which is a wonderfully complex design with more than a little asymmetry in its drawing. I often say some rugs have a lifetime of interest and this piece is probably one of the best examples of the type. The overall design is almost impossible to take in, it is quite hypnotic to look at as the eye drifts from delicate detail to the overall pattern. Even the borders are a delight with the main border showing an interlocking floral design. The narrrow reciprocal black and white border is quite powerful despite its size and completes the picture in this stunning archaic looking piece. The wear is obvious but in this case I think it adds to the look.
Condition:
A lot of wear with some foundation showing through. The sides require some attention which I hope to sort soon.
