A high quality crisply drawn Kazak rug with a bold look. Good rugs are about quality and variety of colours as well as good design, this example has it all with a brilliant indigo ground plus soft green, red, yellow and aubergine dyes beautifully combined to create a stunning vision. The leaf and calyx border is well articulated and the inner border with its green ground is delightful too. I think sometimes borders are under appreciated but they can really improve a rugs appearance by creating contrast and framing the central field properly. The two meandering S borders picked out in and red and ivory do this here. The five hooked diamonds almost join into a column and seem to float on the blue field which is quite sparsely decorated. Note the little person at the top, I wonder if this is a self portrait or just a fun addition, I like to believe that the weaver actually looked like that. This is a rug with a couple of issues which does reduce its worth but it does make it more affordable too.
Condition:
Fair condition, a little wear to the field. The main issue is the two tension creases that have been resolved by removing the raised section and sewing the rug back together. this has been executed well and makes little difference to the overall look.
