Khamseh rug, early 20th century

A classic Baharlu Khamseh with a white field and rows of alternately facing boteh dominating the design. These pieces are generall quite finely knotted with soft wool and rich dyes. The brick red border is to me a signature of Khamseh pieces and a useful pointer in attribution when compared to the similar rugs of the Qashqai and Luri. The white field is almost obscured by a host of miniature boteh, note the ornamentation within the larger boteh which are beautifully drawn in a range of bright colours. The borders both main and secondary show that bright palette typical of tribal rugs with a lovely green and a soft yellow. Altogether a very attractive rug.
