Khamseh rug, second half 19th century
Measurements: 291cm x 144cm (9’7 x 4’9)
54 Knots per inch
Price: £1,500
One of my favourite acquisitions, this Khamseh has everything I look for in a rug. It is a seriously good example and was it not for the condition I would expect it to fetch several times the stated price. So the compromise is in the condition but for someone looking for a special piece it does make it more affordable. The central diamond with its bright pomegranate designs grabs the eye immediately, the white spandrels that extend down the sides occasionally intruding into the field show off the soft red which is dotted with floral motifs. The blue main border is quite bold and also very wide for a narrow rug like this and contrasts with the inner field whilst reflecting the motifs seen across it. A very good old Khamseh with an unusally bright palette and silky softy wool.
Condition:
Poor condition, this is a loosely woven rug with many areas of weakness, small holes and patchy repairs. The selvedges need attention which I will take on when time allows. The price reflects the condition.
