These small square rugs from western Anatolia were dowry pieces, they are light and floppy to the feel and the palette shown is typical of the region. This is a good old example, quite finely knotted for a village rug it has its original kelim ends. The central diamond is beautifully decorated with a complex mirrored design with the border constructed from stepped floral motifs. The random placement of the flowers on the blue background is wonderful, they crowd together and bump into each other. Occasionally one obscures part of its neighbour appearing to slide over it creating a sense of depth. A very good example of the type with a well drawn design.

Condition:

Fair condition with some wear, the main issue is a tension repair where a crease has been removed and the rug sewn back together.
