Kula rug, early 19th century

Measurements: 162cm x 119cm (4’5 x 3’11)

90 Knots per inch

Price: £450

A particular favourite of mine is the Kula rug with its unique weave and bright palette. I think this could be older than stated but I prefer caution in the case of dating pieces. The soft yellow of the border is pleasing and the contrast with the light blue is perfect. I like to talk about rugs having an archaic look and this is a great example, the drawing of the designs along with the unusual palette speaks of a great age, something sadly reflected in its condition which is far from ideal. The borders all show a design which switches direction at each turn apart from the inner border at the bottom which holds its form. A relic of a lost age this rug even in this condition is a treasure.

Condition:

Very poor with lots of crude repair and wear. The price is drastically reduced to reflect this.
