You might have guessed by now that I love Kurdish rugs and this is no exception. This features one of my favourite designs, the Harshang pattern and it also shows a common Kurdish border known as Zanbaqi. As one might expect on a Kurdish rug the colours are wonderful with several shades of red, blue and green set off by a soft yellow. I would place this is north Persia based on it’s single weft, it could be called Garrus but I am by no means certain of this attribution. It is a sturdy rug with a solid foundation and fairly coarse knotting. I simply love the tones on this piece especially the two reds when they are set next to each other. There is a date which I have not deciphered yet but I expect this to be late 19th Century, older pieces would generally have a wider field. That said it is a very beautiful rug with good age and one that I will miss when it finally goes to a new home.
