Luri rug, early 20th century

Measurements: 199cm x 158cm (6’6 × 5’2)

30 Knots per inch

Price: £320

This is a very coarsely knotted rug at just 30 knots per square inch. Fineness of weave can be overrated and seems a waste when a rug has no character or interest. Despite its crude construction and obvious wear and repair this rug has a lot going for it. The design is wonderfully asymmetric and the oversize motifs are bustling for space amongst an array of smaller motifs especially at the bottom. The weaver allows them to breath more as ther rug progresses to the top. The colours are muted and the squarer shape makes it a very saleable piece. The light blue border is refreshing and balances the darker field, the minor borders that flank it are also attractive especially the inner reciprocal one.

Condition:

Lots of wear and repair much of which is obvious, the price reflects this.
