Malayer rug, early 20th century

Measurements: 194cm x 103cm (6’4 x 3’5)

42 Knots per inch

Price: £240

A crude but attractive little rug with a hot synthetic red which probably places it in the Malayer category. The Kurdish butterfly border is attractive and the main red motif that extends the length of the field is set off by the deep blue that surrounds it. The light blue in the corners is fresh and borders a deep purple which is normally indicative of an early date. It is possible to buy an antique rug, in the proper sense of the word being over 100 years old, for less than £300 if you are prepared to compromise on wear and tear. I think this is a charming example at a very affordable price.

Condition:

Quite a lot of old moth damage with one area noticeably sculpted by the damage. some repair to the pile and selvedges and one end having a little loss but also secured for use.
