Ningxia rug, early 19th century
Measurements: 135cm x 71cm (4’5 x 2’4)
63 Knots per inch
Price: £250
Ningxia rugs are often quite reserved in their design and are a far cry from the elaborate drawing of other and later chinese pieces. This has really good age and I think a wonderful archaic look to match. Much of the central light field has worn away but it is possible to pick out a lattice design. The soft blue in the spandrels has a subtle beauty with the deep blue of the border framing the calm space within. I am no expert on Chinese rugs but when I venture outside of my comfort zone I search for anything that has a look and this rug certainly meets that criteria.
Condition:
Very low pile to the central field with foundation showing. The ends are a little untidy and have lost some rows of knots as is to be expected on a piece of this age. There is a small hole repair visible in the photographs.
