NW Persian saddlebag, circa 1900

Measurements: 56cm x 54cm

56 Knots per inch

Price: £75

This charming little bag has suffered the ravages of time but still retains its simple beauty. Rows of boteh alternate in direction and march off under the border. There is something about allover designs that makes one think of infinity especially when they appear as one frame in a bigger picture. The border is qashqai like in design but the weave is quite different and although these naive pieces could have been made anywhere, I have opted for North West Persia where the repeat boteh is a common decoration. The colours are subdued but balanced, I particularly like the tone of the madder field.

Condition:

Poor condition with some worn areas. The sides are a little ragged and the kelim back has wear too. The price reflects this.
