Quchan Kurdish rug, circa 1900

Measurements: 187cm x 142cm (6’2 x 4’8)

48 Knots per inch

Price: £1,800

This is an unusual piece and a difficult one to attribute, it has the construction of a Gabbeh with many wefts between each row of knots and thick shaggy pile. Some might call it Luri but with the advice of the expert rug community I have opted for Quchan Kurdish. It has some artistry in its allover design with multi-coloured hooked diamonds floating over an abrashed sea of blue. The random nature of the design is a delight as are the two reciprocal borders that frame the larger geometric border. Tribal pieces are fascinating for many reasons this piece has all of the qualities one might expect as well as being in excellent condition.
