Sarouk rug, early 20th century
Measurements: 156cm x 97cm (5’1 x 3’2)
196 Knots per inch
Price: £750
A very finely knotted workshop rug dominated by a bold central medallion. The contrast between the light field and the dark blue works well and the four soft red spandrels intrude into the field with a strangely squarish geometric design. The drawing of the floral motifs is typical of Sarouk pieces as is the palette. The dark floral border frames the piece well and the overall look is well balanced in design and colour. The weave is very tight with the warps sitting on top of each other, this makes it a very strong little rug that will bear heavy traffic well.
Condition:
Good condition with just a small nibble out of one corner. The sides have been strengthened with leather strips to keep them flat.
