Although in general I prefer tribal rugs it is hard not to appreciate the quality and beauty of good workshop rugs like this. It is very finely knotted which allows an intricate design to be created. This is enhanced by the palette of colours which contrast and create layers of depth. The light central medallion, richly decorated is shown off by the deep blue field that surrounds it, the blue appearing to recede into the depths as the light medallion bursts forth. The tone of the light madder spandrels is perfect against the blue and these spandrels creep up the side of the rug bordered with a serrated golden band. The border mirrors the blue field and holds many large stylised boteh. Sarouk rugs have a strong appeal to me and the older ones such as this have an archaic look which I find very pleasing. A very decorative and interesting rug.

Condition:

Fair condition. The sides have curled under in places as is common on these pieces, the sides are a little cracked in places and the pile has some wear.
