Sarouk rug, circa 1900
Measurements: 145cm x 100cm (3’6 x 3’3)
236 Knots per inch
Price: £550
A very finely knotted example of Sarouk workshop weaving. The balance of the light madder against a deep blue is wonderful and not uncommon on Sarouk pieces. The design is intricate due to its high knot count which allows for cleaner curves to be drawn. I find the spandrels dominate the rug with arabesque tendrils having an art nouveau appearance. Note how the tendrils also become the border for the inner red field which varies in tone to create depth. The main border displays large palmettes joined by tendrils which hold sprays of flowers. A very beautiful and highly decorative rug.
Condition:
The sides have curled under in places as is common on Sarouk rugs. There is an area of damage with possibly some old repair in the red field.
