Shahsavan bagface, second half 19th century

Measurements: 54cm x 51cm

Price: £220

This is a great little bagface with a strong allover design of hexagons picked out in different colours and framed by an ivory border. There are many inconsistencies which gives it some charm, one has to forgive the weaver these and appreciate the complexity of their craft. I would prefer to have this type of piece in my collection as it feels very personal, the random shapes and the variation in the interior motifs. Even the border doesn’t line up at the bottom which points more to a deliberate attempt to create variation and fluidity of pattern than perfection. Note how the central field appears lower than the border when you stare at it, a window into an infinite world of connected shapes.
