Rugs from this area are amongst the finer pieces in the Caucasus. Fine knotting creates a well articulated design as is seen on this piece. The hooked border often seen on Kurdish rugs and thought to represent geese is well drawn and finer than any I have seen to date. The three hooked medallions are typical Shirvan motifs and are surrounded by many animals, flowers and geometric designs. The reciprocal borders make a nice frame for the field, notice how one changes direction three quarters of the way along the bottom edge. An odd decision for the weaver but anyone who has looked at a lot of rugs will know these inconsistencies are the norm. I love the palette of this rug, particularly the soft red and use of white to lighten its aspect.
Condition:
Good condition with a couple of areas of wear and a little wrinkling to one end.
