Tekke rugs have perhaps the most recognisable designs, there are many copies made but the modern versions are inferior pieces in ever aspect. This one is very finely knotted with a glowing red, the turkoman velvet as they are called such is the quality of the wool. I like the variation in the ends which create some interest in what is otherwise a conservative design. The format is a useful one being almost square, these proportions are unusual in oriental rugs. The condition makes the piece very affordable and competetive with modern rug prices which seems amazing but the market for antique rugs has been depressed for some years now and the good news is that it is making good pieces more affordable.
Condition:
Quite a lot of wear with some creases in one corner. The selvedges probably need overcasting. There is a backing sewn to the kelim ends to keep them from fraying.
