I love these old Turkoman chuvals and I am always on the lookout for good examples. I particularly like the plum red ground of Yomut pieces with their strong reciprocal red and blue borders. This piece has a synthetic red, the guls are also simplified from the 19th Century versions which dates this at the turn of the century. It is always true to say the older the better in this field but this piece still has good age and a quality to it being very finely woven with the knots packed down vertically at 17 to the inch. Notice how one gul departs from the standard in its central diamond. It can take years to notice some of the nuances of these tribal pieces and that to me is part of the fun.

Condition:

Some wear to the field and both selvedges have retreated. There is also a small hole towards the top.
